Myths about Travel Agents

Travel agents are making a comeback and they are doing so in a new way. Many travel consumers wonder, “Why do I need a travel agent when I can book online and save money?” Here are a few myths about travel agents and reasons to consider using one.

Myth #1:  Travel agents cost money.

Most travel agents get deals and promotions that are not available on the website booking engines. They have access to hotels with free breakfast, Wi-Fi, free upgrades and a late checkout.

Myth #2:  If I have a problem, the site where I made booking arrangements can help me.

Often you are on your own, especially if you used a discount website. If you book a trip online and have a family emergency, you are on your own. If you book with a travel agent, you have a personal resource to get the situation handled as they have access to many resources to assist travelers.

Myth #3:  Travel agents charge surcharges and fees on top of the price.

Some certainly do but most get paid on commission by hotels, airlines and resorts. The benefit of their experience is the number one reason to work with them. They have many options available to book travel and many also have coworkers with experience and a travel network they can lean on to help with research and booking or to help solve problems that can come up while traveling.

Myth #4:  The need for travel agents is being replaced by the internet.

Some things can’t be replaced by technology. Personal touch is one of them. The internet is a valuable resource but it cannot replace the expertise, guidance and personal service of a travel agent. At a time when travelers are stressed out with hectic schedules, travel agents have all of the information at their fingertips, saving valuable hours of surfing on the web. Agents can also offer insider tips based on experience and relationships with resorts, airlines, etc.

Myth #5:  Travel Agents are trying to cheat me if they don’t quote me the cheapest rate.

Cheaper doesn’t always equal better. Longer waits, inadequate resources and ungodly hours for travel can all change a dream vacation into a nightmare.

Consider using a travel agent for your next vacation. What have you got to lose?
