Safety Tips for Senior Citizens from Home Helpers

Falling is the leading cause of injury death among older Americans, and every year nearly one out of three adults, age 65 and older, will fall. Because September is Fall Prevention Awareness Month, Home Helpers of the Twin Cities is educating the local community on steps to ensure the safety and independence of aging loved ones at home.

“Being aware of fall risk factors and prevention steps can have a huge impact on the safety of senior citizens in the home,” says Jennifer Olesen, co-owner of Home Helpers of the Twin Cities. “Reviewing risk factors with your aging loved ones and taking precautionary measures can increase their longevity and provide peace of mind to the families.”

To reduce the risk of falls, families can: identify fall risk factors, including vision and balance problems; remove tripping hazards, such as extension cords, from the home; avoid using low shelves and cabinets below waist level; ensure that floors of frequently used rooms have tiles to prevent skidding; and avoid the use of stairs by preparing a room on the ground floor. It is also helpful to see a physician who can provide increased insight on fall risk factors.

Home Helpers is the nation’s leading care franchise specializing in non-medical, personal care and companionship and medical services for seniors, new mothers and those recovering from illness or injury.
