Timeless Health Benefits of Yoga for Every Age and Expertise level

Feb 01, 2024 12:00AM ● By Lindsay Kaster
Yoga offers many physical and mental health benefits, regardless of age or experience level. Whether a person is experiencing an illness or chronic condition, recovering from surgery, or managing the stresses of daily life, a yoga practice can offer much needed support.

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, yoga has been shown to ease hyperactivity and inattention in children, improve anxiety in adolescents, and improve many benefits for adults of all ages from fibromyalgia and arthritis symptoms to neck pain and low back pain. Some research has shown yoga participants to have improvements in menopause symptoms, blood sugar control in people with Type 2 diabetes, and lung function in those with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

An article published by Johns Hopkins Medicine posits that yoga can help to improve strength, balance and flexibility; ease discomfort of arthritis symptoms; address factors that contribute to heart disease such as high blood pressure and excess weight; improve sleep, manage stress, and may lead to a boost in mental and physical energy.

Statistics from Yoga Earth show that 86percent of regular yoga practitioners reported a reduction in stress, as well as an overall improved sense of mental wellness and clarity. Of those surveyed with chronic inflammation, 82% showed reductions of inflammation by nearly 50% after just six weeks daily yoga.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, “Yoga therapy is a whole-body approach to better health by using the tools of yoga to meet your specific physical, mental and emotional needs and goals. You’re an active participant on your path to wellness.”
