Sight
Shift your perspective. If you are inside, step outdoors; if outside, step indoors. Notice a tree, a flower or a piece of art.
Smell
Carry an essential oil you enjoy—lavender, geranium, ylang ylang or bergamot are favorites. Take a gentle inhale when you feel anxious or low.
Taste
Nourish your body. Drink Water. Eat protein. One of the first questions I ask patients during a crisis call is: When did you last eat? What did you eat?
Touch
Engage your sense of touch. Pet an animal. Give or receive a hug—even from yourself. Feel the texture of rocks. Let water run over your skin—take a shower, bath or simply touch the stream from a faucet. Walk barefoot in the grass.
Hearing
Offer your ears something soothing or energizing. Play music—calming or lively, depending on your need. Step outside and listen for birdsong.
Breath
Breathe slowly and deeply. On the exhale, count as high as feels comfortable and safe. Notice the calm that follows.
