Free Classes at Mississippi Market

Mississippi Market transitioned its in-person cooking and wellness class program to a virtual platform in April 2020. Since then, they have offered virtual classes for free as an educational resource for the community. The goal is to provide accessible and affordable cooking tips, tricks and recipes while also helping people feel connected during this time of isolation.

While they miss cooking together in person, Mississippi Market is honored to have served 2,860 people through the online education program since the pandemic began. This is more than a 200 percent increase in participation from previous years.

Some highlights of the past year include regular yoga classes focused on relaxation and rejuvenation; a new cultural cooking series featuring Ethiopian, Himalayan and Ugandan cooking; an Eat More Plants series on how to eat a more plant-based and sustainable diet; and a virtual wine and cheese tasting with local partners.

The class instructors are local and over 50 percent identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), bringing a rich variety of culinary skills and recipes to the community. March classes include Instant Pot: Noodle Soups, Ugandan Vegan Cooking; and Budget Cooking: Millet Power Bowl with Moroccan-Spiced Carrots.

Mississippi Market has been offering local, natural and organic food to its St. Paul neighbors for over 40 years. As a community-owned grocery store, they provide high-quality, fair-priced goods and services and work toward a sustainable local economy and global environment. Mississippi Market, a food co-op open to everyone, empowers our diverse communities to be healthy, make choices that help sustain our planet and create a more just-local economy.
