Through the Lupus Glass: Living Inside the Purple

Lupus: When we hear the words autoimmune disease, it can feel overwhelming, and fear often follows. Life, once peaceful, seems turned upside down. Lupus is a condition with a name but no clear origin, leaving many feeling lost as they search for ways to manage it and feel "okay."

I was diagnosed with Lupus on December 26, 2017. I went through three difficult years of chemotherapy, nearly losing the fight at times. But one day, I reconnected with my inner strength, reminded of my background in healing. Drawing on knowledge of aromatherapy, herbalism, Reiki and meditation, I turned to holistic methods alongside good nutrition to help manage symptoms and transform my approach to living with the disease.

Lupus forced me to live, and I’m choosing to do so naturally. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes the body’s immune system to attack healthy cells, mistaking them for threats. This leads to a range of symptoms which can include severe pain, migraines, skin lesions, hives, rashes, headaches, sensitivity to sunlight, inflammation, heart disease, dizziness, disorientation, brain fog, fatigue and changes in appetite and weight. While there is no cure for Lupus at present, exploring holistic approaches to care can provide ways to live with the condition and even fight back against its impact.

Holistic Healing

This approach looks at the whole person—mind, body and spirit. Instead of treating isolated symptoms, it seeks to address the individual’s overall well-being. Holistic healing doesn’t erase damage or trauma, but it aims to reduce its control over our life.

Some methods include Reiki for clearing stagnant energy, aromatherapy, dietary adjustments, plant-based medicine, meditation to calm anxiety, stress management and physical exercise. These practices help promote healing in a more balanced, integrated way.

Although holistic practices can support those living with Lupus, they also offer benefits for people with other chronic conditions, such as fibromyalgia, Raynaud’s disease, Sjogren’s syndrome, eczema and Lyme disease. For anyone seeking to reclaim their health, working with a holistic practitioner can be a step toward a more natural, sustainable path.

I have lived with Lupus for over seven years. With education, lifestyle changes and a commitment to holistic practices, I continue to manage my condition and find new ways to thrive. The journey is not without its challenges, but it is possible to find strength and balance through a more natural approach.

For those navigating Lupus or other chronic conditions, you’re not alone. There are ways to regain a sense of control and well-being, and embracing a holistic lifestyle may offer hope and empowerment. Living with Lupus can be loud, proud and strong.
