Best Natural Remedies for Gum Disease

Finding the best way to improve an individual’s health and immune system in the recent health crisis creates the need for a holistic approach and one of the most effective ways of mending is through holistic dental care. This approach is focused on prevention and all other elements of health while treating dental issues. Hence, holistic dentistry looks at the whole person and places a greater emphasis on the entire being. This is based on the notion that all aspects of health, including emotional and spiritual well-being, are interconnected. This approach is also known as natural dentistry, unconventional dentistry, and progressive dentistry, among many other alternative names.

Gum Disease Causes 

Periodontitis, also known as gum disease or periodontal disease, begins with bacterial development in the mouth and, if not treated appropriately, can lead to tooth loss due to deterioration of the tissue that surrounds the teeth. Periodontitis is frequently preceded by gingivitis (gum inflammation). Although gingivitis does not always lead to periodontitis, this affects the majority of individuals at some time in their life, and its mild symptoms make it easy to overlook. However, if left untreated, it can lead to more serious dental issues.

Plaque, a sticky film of germs and food, forms around the teeth when a person neglects and/or forgets to brush, floss, and rinse with mouthwash. The muck produces acids which attack the outer shell of the teeth (enamel) and cause decay. Plaque hardens into tartar after 72 hours which builds around the gum line making it difficult to thoroughly clean the teeth and gums. This accumulation irritates and inflames the gums over time, resulting in gingivitis after which the rest of the damages follow.

Holistic Dentistry Natural Remedies 

Here are some common and effective natural remedies in holistic dentistry: 

  1. Neem – This is an Ayurvedic remedy; Ayurveda focuses on maintaining good health and preventing and treating illness via lifestyle modifications such as massage, meditation, yoga, dietary adjustments and the use of herbal medicines. The neem leaf extract has antibacterial properties that improve overall gum health, and helps remove plaque and tartar to prevent gingivitis. Neem extract mouthwashes are an effective holistic approach to protect oral health without causing any harm to the mouth.

  2. Green Tea – Green tea is abundant in antioxidants which may aid in the reduction of inflammation. Green tea can assist in reducing the inflammatory response of the immune system to germs in the mouth. The gums and supporting jawbone suffer less damage as a result of the lessened inflammation.

  3. Tea Tree Oil – Tea tree oil is an essential oil made from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia plant, which is native to Australia. Tea tree oil gets its name from the fact that the leaves were once used as a tea replacement. The oil from the leaves is the component that is utilized medicinally. It is important to note that undiluted tea tree oil can be harmful if applied directly to the mouth.

  4. Hydrogen Peroxide – This is a mild antiseptic and is frequently effective in preventing skin infections caused by small cuts and scrapes. Hydrogen peroxide swishing can also help alleviate mild oral irritations and destroy germs that might cause gum disease. Hydrogen peroxide in a 3 percent solution and diluted with 50 percent water can be used for oral hygiene. Consider utilizing a water flosser to dilute hydrogen peroxide. These oral irrigators spray water around the teeth and beneath the gums, removing and killing dangerous germs.

  5. Aloe Vera – It is an effective natural remedy to treat burns and scrapes inside the mouth and is extensively used to help gums heal after surgeries. Aloe vera gels are effective for swollen or sore gums as well. The use of a gel may help with early healing and minimize pain and may provide comfort if the gums are painful or inflamed.

  6. Turmeric Paste – Turmeric paste has healing and cleansing properties that can be effectively used for holistic dental practices. It is capable of reducing inflammation because of its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. It can be consumed as a part of the diet or accessed as oral supplements for maximum benefits.

  7. Salt Water – This is a natural disinfectant that is easily available and convenient to use. This holistic dentistry practice helps eliminate disease-causing bacteria in the mouth and improves the healing conditions of inflamed mouth tissue. Warm salt water is a good start to clean the mouth.

  8. Lemongrass Oil – A small amount of lemongrass oil has high-antibacterial properties that can cleanse plaque effectively. It is also used to treat gum inflammation. Swishing two drops of lemongrass oil in a cup of water for 30 seconds and spitting it out is a great natural remedy to treat and prevent gum disease.

  9. Vitamin C – This plays a crucial role in protecting overall health. Consuming fruits with high-vitamin C content is an amazing way to protect the teeth, gums, and jaw longer. Some common edibles include Brussels sprouts, red peppers, grapefruit, oranges, kiwi, papaya, and other fruits.

It is important to note that mercury/amalgam fillings or metal crowns can also contribute to gum disease, as they are not biocompatible and can cause inflammation. Replacement of these restorations can help with overall gum disease and periodontal issues. 

Taking care of one’s teeth and gums from an early stage will help prevent damages, diseases, inflammation, and other detrimental conditions to oral health. Consult with professionals and set a routine to practice holistic dental natural remedies in boosting oral health immunity. A good holistic oral hygiene routine following the aforementioned tips will benefit a great deal in the long run.
