Happy 2023!
The new year is always a time to dream of the possibilities, consider the endings and decide what we want to create moving forward. I am in the midst of this myself as I see a significant part of my life coming to a close.
As many of you know, for the past 31 years my husband and I have had the distinct honor of caring for adults who are elderly or have a disability. We started the business when I was just 22 years old and really had no business caring for people with significant needs. That is the beauty of youth—I was ignorant enough to not understand how difficult it could be and confident enough to believe we could do it.
And we did do it. We have cared for nearly 50 people over the years and provided end-of-life care to 10 of them. We have learned so much about life, each other, and the unique perspectives of others. We have grown in our spirituality and have loved and been loved beyond belief. This adventure that was supposed to last only a few years—until my grandparents passed—grew to a career that gave our lives meaning and purpose.
Like every great adventure, this, too, is coming to an end. We have one client still with us for whom we have been providing care for the past 16 years. He is “family” and, of course, will be with us until his time here on Earth is complete. But we know we are transitioning, having concluded that it is time for us to move on to the next great adventure. We are not sure what this looks like yet but are actively creating it together—and the possibilities are abundant.
We are grateful every day for the people who have shared their lives with us. We have so many wonderful memories of each person, and still share stories that we hold in our hearts. I hope that will never change, because no matter how hard it is to make this decision, we want to always hold the memories of these incredible beings.
We have some ideas of what we would like to do next, but over the years we have come to trust that where we will make the most impact will be revealed. So, we are moving forward in trust and are excited to watch it unfold.
This month, I encourage you to let go of what has served its purpose and welcome a new adventure. It is high time to stretch ourselves to serve our greatest purpose.
In Love,
